Uses of Solar Power

Posted on November 30th, 2009

Solar power addresses the concerns quite well because it uses sunlight for generating energy, which is available free, and it is harmless to the environment. This is

why many domestic and commercial establishments are switching to solar power to meet their energy requirements. Moreover, solar power is of great value for use in

remote locations where you do not have conventional sources of power. Solar power is also widely used by owners of Recreational Vehicles (RV) and luxury boats.

Solar Power at your home.

Solar power is being noticed for its widespread use at homes. Solar powered lights are quite common for garden lighting and some people are using it even for indoor

lighting. Solar power is undoubtedly a viable energy source for your home because it has no recurring cost and a very low, almost negligible, maintenance cost.

Photovoltaic Tiles for Your Home

he big concern regarding the use of solar power is the bulky size of solar panels. However, this concern has largely been addressed with the development of small solar

photovoltaic cells and the solar photovoltaic roof shingles. The solar photovoltaic roof shingles or tiles look quite similar to your normal roof shingles and provide

you the freedom from large solar panels.

You can use photovoltaic tiles to supply electrical power for your home use. This electrical power can be used to heat water, and even heat your house. Some people

also use solar power to heat the pool. The solar power generated by the PV shingles is just like the normal power you use for your everyday needs.

Solar Water Pumps

Solar power is being used to power water pumps in remote areas. Although windmills used to be the main source of power for the water pumps, recently the solar power

has increasingly become the preferred source.

The government provides grants to people for purchase and installation of solar power devices such as solar energy panels and solar photovoltaic singles. Using solar

power really gives you a double benefit as you are not only preventing environmental damage but also you are also cutting down your electricity bills. If you are not

able to use solar power for your house on your own, you still have the option of buying the solar power from the grid.

Shower curtains also tend to have a hygienic function as far as your bathroom is concerned. Most illnesses are encouraged by moist conditions and a wet bathroom will increase the chances of them occuring. One problem that comes to mind is that of athletes’ foot. The feet develop this condition when they are exposed to too much water especially on bathroom floors.

A moist environment will encourage the growth of, moulds and fungi. Having a shower curtain in place will make care and maintenance of your bathroom an easy and simple task. Because they are not difficult to put up, you can fit the curtain yourself. You should be able to get a curtain complete with all the things that you require to be able to install the curtain.

There are a number of places that you can get shower curtains from. You can shop around the local shops and get to compare prices. If you really want to make sure you have seen everything that’s on offer then check the internet. It keeps you from visiting various shops and you can actually buy your curtain online.

Is Bamboo the Best Sustainable Material to Use?

Posted on November 30th, 2009

Ok, so the Bamboo PC was just an eco promotion. The laptop launched at the Hanover computer fair last March, with a laminated bamboo casing around a pretty conventional computer won’t make a dent in the rising tide of plastics sold around the world.

Despite not having any major eco benefits to the bamboo computers, they did give a good demonstration of what can be done with a material that versatile.

Bamboo must be the only raw material that can be used as food, clothing and building materials. One of the early light bulbs created by Edison used bamboo. Its strength and low price tag makes it a great material for building, particularly in parts of Asia where it’s used as scaffolding. The fibres of bamboo poles have high strength both in tension and compression. Bamboo has almost the same tensile strength to weight ratio as steel, plus it has roughly twice as muhc compressive strength as concrete. And now there’s a bamboo laptop!

Bamboo will please anyone whose buying eco-friendly home furnishings. To start with, it’s hightly sustainable. Some species of bamboo grow at more than a metre every day. The locals that live near this amazing species of bamboo can cut down as much as they want and still have the same sized fores t at the end of the year as they had at the beginning. On the global warming sides of things, being a plant, any product made from bamboo contains a large amount of atmospheric carbon within it. Whereas any equivalent product made from plastic actually increases the carbon level in the atmosphere!

Another point would be, because bamboo is a natural material, there are huge variations between the plants, this makes it a very difficult material to be used in mass production. You can be pretty sure that a craftsman has produced any bamboo item you buy. If you go to a reputable source you’ll also know that the craftsman got a fair wage for his or her work, and that no one was exploited by western buying power. The final thing is that you’ll be sure that the item you bought hasn’t gathered any air miles during its creation.

With eco credentials this strong, it’s a surprise bamboo built products are so beautiful. Picture a skilfully made bamboo box, lovingly lacquered with 15 layers of natural shellac. All natural and really stylish. I myself bought a fantastic, hand-crafted bamboo knife block and am seriously considering following suit with other bamboo kitchen accessories like fruit bowls. Stylish and ethical. Win. :)

New Audi Is Fuel Cell Powered, Nah Its Just A Scooter

Posted on November 29th, 2009

Unfortunatley this isnt a brand new car but a new scooter that was revealed in Japan not too long ago, however it does mean the technology is moving forward.

Unveiled at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show the fuel cell powered scooter was a big hit. The company bringing this to us are called Intelligent Energy and in a joint venture with Suzuki they released the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter.

When the previous addition to this vehicle was released onto the show two years ago the people that attended were shocked so you can imagine would it felt like to see it put into a better looking vehicle that would be more realisic to drive.

The city-friendly Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter is a demonstration of the potential for zero emissions motorcycles to significantly reduce emissions around the world. Of course if you do not know how it all works it is all powered by hydrogen which means it can be refueled rather quickly and has a great riding range.

The scooter uses the latest version of Intelligent Energy’s unique and proprietary PEM clean fuel cell engine, which are light, compact and well-suited to mass manufacture.
“The zero-emissions Burgman scooter is the latest product of the successful commercial relationship between Suzuki and Intelligent Energy”, commented Dr. Henri Winand, CEO at Intelligent Energy.

“Of course, these clean fuel cell engine powered motorcycles are not simply for motor shows, and can be widely available to everyone in the near future. It actually already has a market of just over 40 million units per annum meaning there is a hell of a lot to get out of it all. Intelligent Energy and Suzuki are actually going to start working even closer on making these vehicles even better and will be holding various tryouts soon

So there you have it, the possible future for the car. Let us just hope that it does come to the car industry in the near future and doesn’t end up as a used Audi Of course for the time being you could go for a current car like the Audi R8 or the Audi TT Roadster.
