Current Home Wind Generator Advancements

Posted on September 30th, 2009

Wind power technology has been steadily improving for a quite some time. The vast improvements in the past decade have allowed it to be increasingly used for home generation of energy Modern wind generators are smaller, quieter and produce more electricity than ever before and can be a great source of alternative energy for most homeowners. For homeowners that would like to save some money, there are plans and guides available that teach how to build a wind turbine.

The most significant problem with early types of wind turbines was that they were big and needed a very strong and consistent wind to get them spinning. Even though they generated large amounts of power when they were spinning, they were not good fits for many people due to their size and height requirements. Because these wind turbines were being used in residential environments, they needed to be mounted very high in the air to catch a consistent wind. In order to generate maximum energy Because of this, an expensive, heavy duty, and often ugly tower had to be erected on which the wind generator was mounted. Many HOA rules or town ordinances also prohibit or restrict towers or wind turbines. Because of these things, areas with lots of open space that don’t have many tall trees or buildings were better suited to the older, larger wind turbines.

People with homes on smaller lots, or in areas with buildings or trees have been helped by these recent wind generator designs. The smaller, more recent wind turbines require much less wind to spin. They are also generally much lighter because they are made of more innovative materials. This means that they don’t need to be mounted as high as the older wind generators and can still generate a good amount of power from a smaller wind. The blade design of these newer wind generators is more efficient which allows them to be more efficient and also much quieter. People who live in smaller neighborhoods can generate renewable power without disturbing their neighbors with these more modern wind generators.

The newer wind generators can turn more quickly and generator electricity sooner than the bigger ones because they are much lighter. The blades of the wind generator have to rotate to point into the wind for the turbine to operate. A rudder on the tail is usually used to accomplish this. With the larger wind turbines it took a strong wind to orient them before they could start spinning to generate power. In a light wind, they might not even spin up and never generate power. Because of the much lower wind requirement for spinning up, the newer, lighter wind turbines can spin up and start generating power more quickly. So, the older, larger wind generators were spinning less often even though they would generator more electricity when they were actually spinning. Over the course of a year, the newer, smaller wind turbines can generator almost as much electricity as the larger, heavier ones because they spin more consistently. Installation costs can be considerably less with these more receint wind turbines because they can be mounted directly to roofs. A homemade wind turbine can be just what any homeowner who wants to produce free, green energy is looking for.
